Bulletin board displays that celebrate warm weather will help tap into the teachable moments in the coming spring.

As the weather warms up and students begin looking forward to spring break, change the bulletin board displays in the classroom to reflect the new season and keep students focused. By bringing attention to those exciting things that they enjoy about spring, teachers can make creative bulletin boards that should bring fresh learning into the classroom.

Spring Bulletin Board Displays

Have students cut out various construction paper flowers for bulletin board decorations.Teachers can put writing prompts on each flower for interactive bulletin boards that will encourage creativity in writing. Use the flowers as a modified word wall to teach new vocabulary. Introduce new facts by writing each fact on a flower, and put together a social studies time-line by using each flower as a line on the time-line. The flowers can also teach younger students basic math facts and help them practice their letters.

Creative Bulletin Boards for Reading

Great elementary bulletin boards can be made by the students. Have students decorate their own kites cut from a piece of construction paper. Attach a long piece of string to each kite and hang them just outside the room in the hall so that visiting parents and other classes can easily see them. These become your modified classroom bulletin boards.

For each book that the students read, they should write the title, author and a one sentence summary of the book on a construction paper kite bow. These bows then are taped to the kite string and provide a great visual for all the books that are read in the class. Keep a basket of already cut out bows available in the classroom so that as students finish books, they can easily complete their bow.

Bulletin Board Decorations for Easter

Cut out patches of green grass from construction paper and place them randomly on the bulletin board. Put enough grass on the board to give the appearance of a field. Each child should then decorate an Easter egg cutout for placement on the bulletin board display. To make this an educational bulletin board, collect the decorated eggs, and put different writing prompts on the back of each one. Then hide the eggs amidst the grass and when the students are at a loss for something to write about, they can find an egg and use the prompt in their writing.

New Life Bulletin Board Decorations

Spring is all about new life. Flowers bloom, trees bud and produce new leaves, birds hatch and rabbits and other critters have their babies. Create bulletin board displays centered around this new life. They can be as simple and direct as a science display discussing how a chicken hatches from an egg, or as unique as a behavior chart where students hatch and grow as they obey class rules.

Use the flowers, kite bows or Easter eggs as additional motivational incentives for appropriate behavior, allowing students to earn each piece as they obey expectations.
