Many teachers need to use their time off over the summer to get a second job to supplement their income. There are many options for summer jobs.

Although many people cite summers off as a benefit of being a teacher, many teachers actually get another job over the summer to supplement their yearly salary. There are two general thoughts when it comes to summer jobs for teachers: staying in the teaching field, and taking a break from teaching.

Summer Teaching Jobs for Teachers

Teachers who want to stay within the teaching field during the summer have several options available to them. Parents want options for keeping their children occupied and learning even during the summer weeks, which translates to summer camp programs, summer school and tutoring centers.

Summer Camps for Children: There are a variety of camps available to children each summer. The two types of camps are day camps, where children come for just the work day, and overnight camps, where children come and stay for an entire week or more. Teachers should check out local resources for parents to find the camps available in a specific area.

Teach Summer School: Each school district offers a summer school opportunity for children. Many of these programs have requirements for students to qualify for a spot. Summer school offers a select number of teaching positions, usually to the current teachers in the county. These jobs often go quickly, and may not be the best option for a teacher who wants a break from the classroom.

Tutoring Centers: Another summer teaching option is to tutor students or work for a commercial tutoring center such as Sylvan Learning Centers, Huntington Learning Centers or others. These centers provide teachers part time work, require no lesson planning, and allow teachers to work with small groups of students.

Summer Jobs for Teachers

Many teachers need a summer job but want to take a break from teaching. Working for a restaurant or retail store are two options for teachers. Waiting tables in a busy restaurant can provide a nice part time income, yet often require evening hours, which may not be optimal for someone with a family. Getting a job in a retail store is another option that can offer flexible hours and extra income while providing a break from the classroom.

It is important for teachers to look for a summer job early, before the school year is over. This will provide enough time to decide which direction to go, and ensure that there are still positions available. Summer camps and commercial learning centers look to start hiring before school is out in order to be fully staffed once the summer begins. Taking a break from the teaching field and working in retail is another option, but high school and college students will be looking for similar jobs, so there will be competition there as well.
