Ideas to Spend Less Time Grading Student Papers

Dec 31, 2008 Jennifer Wagaman

Grading papers can take a lot of a teacher's prep time unless you come up with some creative ways to reduce this amount of time.

Many teachers find themselves spending inordinate amounts of time grading student work. You have to grade homework, class work, projects and extra credit work. You grade papers, worksheets and spelling tests. The grading can pile up and create a real time management problem for many teachers. Here are some ideas to help simplify the grading process.

Alphabetize Student Papers

Although it does not eliminate the need to grade them having student papers alphabetized before you dive in, can help streamline the grading process as you grade the paper and record the grade in your grade book. Alphabetizing does not need to take any additional time either, as you can have students organize your papers for you. Have different places for students to turn work in to be graded so that each assignment is separated out, and have one student alphabetize each stack of papers each day before dismissal. This not only helps you out, but it gives great practice in alphabetizing.

Grade Assignments as a Class

If you do not have students turn work in to be graded, you will spend less time grading the work. Instead of not assigning work to be graded, consider grading the work together as a class. You can have students put pencils away and use a red or green or blue pen to mark their answers as you go over each assignment, whether it is homework or a class assignment. Ask for volunteers to call out answers to each question, and correct any misunderstandings right on the spot.

Once you have finished going over each assignment with the students and they have graded their own work, each student should put the number of wrong answers on the top of their paper. You can even show them how to write the number of correct answers over the total number of answers to make your job even easier. Students then turn in their graded papers, and you spend just a few minutes going through and recording grades as opposed to hours grading the work yourself.

Finding ways to spend less time grading papers is a great help to any teacher. A clear understanding of what you are looking for in an essay through the use of a rubric, and an answer sheet for multiple choice tests and quizzes can help. Have students alphabetize their papers before collecting them to grade and whenever appropriate, consider having students correct their own papers in class.
