» Irene Taylor - Communication

Hi Amy,

Excellent article on the need for positive and frequent communication with parents. You are so right - and it isn't just new teachers who fall into the trap of not communicating till there's a problem. It is so much easier to discuss a problem area with parents who you have built up a relationship with - and so much harder to start that conversation about misbehavior or academic issues when you've hardly ever met the parent before.

Great job - thanks for an excellent article!!

Irene

respect for parents yes... but respect for the kids too. instead of a sarcastic comment said in front of peers like 'oh, so you left your homework at home, huh? nice, place for it.' maybe we should start setting an example of a gentle reminder, yet not forgetting the consequences (deducting whatever points off), but certainly not making a public spectactle of the poor child. how would we feel if our mistakes - intentional or not - were aired out infront of our peers for all to see. that old saying you can attract more bees with honey than vinegar comes to mind. and again, what are we teaching our children by snipping at them with a snide remark? we are telling them it's okay to talk to each other that way. no wonder this world is so screwed up.
