the hardest part of giving grades in my opinion, is that it becomes a very quick routine matter. I don't like the factory concept of grades- they have long lasting reprecussions on a student's self-esteem and don't always tell you what a student really knows. This is where alternative assessment comes in.

Hi Dorit,

Welcome to your new topic here at New Teacher Support! You are off to a great start with your first two articles.

Grading is a controversial issue - alternative assessment is an interesting concept, too.

I just completed an article about a school in my area that isn't issuing report cards. They are keeping grades, but students don't get quarterly report cards - grades accrue over the course of the school year and monthly updates are sent. Parents and students can also log-on to the online gradebook to check progress. Interesting...

Keep up the great work and thanks for a very interesting article.

Irene

Hi Irene,

I think that the concept of not giving grades for is highly beneficial but the question is a monthly update enough for the child's later years. Students who are exposed to this system, might have a problem later (in another school) where reports are issued or where they might have to give themselves a grade and the grade concept for them causes problems.
