» Feature Writer Barbara Pytel - glad I returned to teaching

I remember feeling very relieved when my first school year was over. All those new preps and few things were automatic. Everything took so much thought. I also had hundreds of things noted to do differently the following year. But, I did enjoy it. Within education I wore different hats and found all to be satifsying...some more than others. Administration is probably dead last. I think you have to give it five years before deciding whether teaching is for you. After all, you don't want to deprive the students one of the "best" teachers just because of first or second year uncertainty.

In response to glad I returned to teaching posted by pytel:
I needed more than five years to find my own voice and now I need a break at twelve. Now, looking back, all those years were spent transferring theory into practical methodology and connecting with the students, and as a result, I now have a voice in the classroom that I can honestly say is my own.

However, many teachers in the system do not have patience to wait it out especially where the bureacracy of schools and their respective countries runs high. In Israel for example, there was recently an article on how 1 out of every four teachers leaves the system. That's a lot! (70,000 teachers are needed according to the article)
